A short time later Ty left to meet Eric and Lauren for the trip to South Station. As he drove away, I couldn’t help but feel compassion for him. The first leg of the trip was going to be difficult because of the tension in the car. But on the way back Ty would hear the details. And since Lauren and I hadn’t spoken alone since our conversation in the kitchen, I was curious to know what had transpired after they left us last night.

I stood on the front porch while Jason and Isaac were upstairs getting ready, planning to join me for Saturday hours at the shop. Their breakfast attire of bikini briefs and a tank top would challenge decorum even for my store. Ty’s study was directly above me and through the open window I could hear an occasional word or giggle — some sounding amorous — while they changed. Although I did need a distraction from my thoughts of Eric and Lauren, I was hoping I wouldn’t begin to hear another episode of “Fuck yeah.”

My cell phone made a sound to let me know that I had received a text. Tapping the icon, I saw it was from Kathy Sinclair. Her text said: “Preston funeral Monday at ten. Join me?” I hit reply and typed: “Sure. I’ll pick you up at your office.” It was just the distraction I needed. My thoughts immediately swung to wondering who I might see among the attendees. Maybe someone will show up in a red sports car. And if I had the chance, I wanted to talk with Lavinia’s daughter, Ruth Scott, to inquire about any association her mother may have had with the Pembrookes other than the purchase of the Sandy Marsh house.
